MODEL: B-24
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Ernest W. Bruce for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as Pilot of a B-24 airplane on a bombing mission over Germany, 29 January 1944. Prior to reaching the objective, two engines of his aircraft became partially disabled. Though unable to maintain his assigned position in the formation, Lieutenant Bruce continued on to the target and accomplished a successful bombing run. On leaving the target area, another engine developed mechanical trouble and shortly afterwards, enemy fighters began to make vicious attacks. During a running battle, which lasted until the enemy coast was crossed, his airplane was heavily damaged and four members of the crew seriously wounded. In spite of this, Lieutenant Bruce skillfully piloted his aircraft back to England and made a safe landing on the first available airfield. The courage and exceptional flying skill displayed by Lieutenant Bruce reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
