Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Henry K. Wetherhold for extraordinary achievement while serving as Pilot of a B-17 airplane on bombing missions over Germany, 19 September 1944, 7 October 1944, 9 November 1944, and 17 January 1945. On 19 September 1944, anti-aircraft fire knocked out the Number Four engine and damaged the Number One engine on the bomb run. After bombs away the aircraft was forced from formation, and Lieutenant Wetherhold successfully completed the flight to friendly territory where an emergency landing was accomplished. While on the bomb run 7 October 1944, it became necessary to feather the Number Two engine. The fuel supply began to drop and all loose and unnecessary equipment was jettisoned. The return flight was skillfully completed by Lieutenant Wetherhold. On 9 November 1944, Lieutenant Wetherhold assumed the lead position of the Wing formation and capably flew the briefed course to the target on time. Damage was received from anti-aircraft fire on the bomb run. Despite these conditions, Lieutenant Wetherhold exhibited a high degree of skill throughout the mission. Adverse weather conditions were encountered on 17 January 1945; however, this officer displayed an exemplary performance of flying skill in the lead position of a Bombardment Group formation. The courage, coolness and tenacity of purpose displayed by Lieutenant Wetherhold on all these occasions reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
