Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Richard M. Storm for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Storm distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 September 1969, while serving with Company C, 228th Aviation Battalion (Assault Support Helicopter)(Airmobile) during an extraction mission near Duc Phong, Republic of Vietnam. Flying through deteriorating weather in an attempt to extract a badly mauled friendly unit, First Lieutenant Storm landed in the hastily made landing zone and began loading the first sortie when the enemy opened fire on the operation. He quickly took to the air and flew the men to a safe area, then, completely disregarding his personal safety, he returned to the enemy infested area to get the remaining men. Upon landing the second time, a heavy attack began again, but First Lieutenant Storm stayed in the contact area until all the men were aboard, then skillfully maneuvered his craft to safety. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
