Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Charles D. Robertson, Chief Warrant Officer W2, United States Army, 121st Avn Co, 13th Avn Bn, for heroism while participating in aerial flight: Chief Warrant Officer Robertson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions from 26 August 1965 to 28 August 1965 while serving as co-pilot and gunner of an armed UH-1H helicopter supporting a search and destroy operation in the vicinity of Vi Thanh, Republic of Vietnam. Upon arrival in the operational area, Chief Warrant Officer Robertson's team was contacted to make a reconnaissance for a possible landing zone for a heliborne force to land and relieve the pressure on the pinned down friendly ground forces. Adverse weather conditions in the area made it necessary for the troop lift aircraft to approach at a low level to the landing zone. While escorting the heliborne force into the landing zone, the unarmed aircraft received intense enemy hostile fire. With complete disregard for personal safety while exposed to the intense hostile fire, Chief Warrant Officer Robertson flew between the troop lift flight and the Viet Cong positions to shield the unarmed aircraft. Chief Warrant Officer Robertson's timely and deadly fire into the Viet Cong positions enabled the ships to land safely. After the troop ships departed the area, Chief Warrant Officer Robertson's ship remained in the area to give the needed supporting fire for the beleaguered ground troops. During the course of action, Chief Warrant Officer Robertson volunteered to escort resupply and medical evacuation aircraft into the operational area. Due to the intense suppressive fire provided by Chief Warrant Officer Robertson, the aircraft were able to approach and land in the area. Chief Warrant Officer Robertson's display of professionalism, courage, and devotion to duty added immeasurably to the success of the operation. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
