Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Joseph E. Robbins, Specialist Five E5, USA, 179th Aslt Hel Co, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Specialist Robbins distinguished himself on 29 October 1966 in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date he was serving as an avionics specialist aboard an aircraft that was delegated a mission to evacuate wounded for a United States infantry unit that was engaged with elements of the North Vietnamese army. Prior attempts to evacuate wounded and resupply this unit had resulted in two aircraft being shot down. Upon approach to the area, he saw the necessity for two crew members to work the ramp area of the aircraft and with no regard for his own safety, he volunteered to man one of the door guns in order that the evacuation could take place. Since communication between ramp personnel and pilot were inoperative, it became necessary for him to take hand signals and pass them on to the pilot in order that the aircraft could be positioned. The aircraft was hovered vertically into the area where the loading of seventeen wounded and five dead was accomplished. As the aircraft departed the area the rotors struck trees causing severe damage to the aft rotor system. Without his calm and professional judgement, accomplishment of this mission would not have been possible. The mission undoubtedly saved the lives of the more seriously wounded who would have died had the evacuation been further delayed. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
