Citation: 1.)
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major John C. Price for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a F-4E Aircraft Commander near Haiphong, North Vietnam on 16 April 1972. On that date, Major Price escorted six separate cells of B-52 bombers participating in a massive raid against a hostile storage area in North Vietnam. In spite of numerous tactical complications including a rocket attack during ground operations, thunderstorms throughout the area and an unprecedented enemy defensive reaction, Major Price safely defended the vulnerable, slow moving bomber from antiaircraft fire, surface-to-air missiles and the threat of MIG aircraft. In order to insure the safety of the B-52's, Major Price disregarded his own personal safety and descended under an overcast in the target area to become the primary targets for the hostile gunners and missiles. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Major Price reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

While fulfilling mission requirements, the flight engaged an overwhelming force of eight hostile aircraft and through intrepid determination and aerial skill, drove the attackers off after destroying two. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Price reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
