The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Gerald L. Peterson for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an AC-47 Navigator near Duc Lap, Republic of Vietnam, on 26 August 1968. On that night, Lieutenant Peterson deftly guided his aircraft through inclement weather and artillery to arrive at the target in minimum time. Lieutenant Peterson spotted numerous hostile positions and accurately directed tremendous firepower upon them. His skillful radio communications and target identification were greatly responsible for thwarting a massive hostile attack and saving the lives of many Allied personnel. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Peterson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Gerald L. Peterson for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an AC-47 Navigator near Dak Pek, Republic of Vietnam, on 14 October 1968. On that date, Lieutenant Peterson skillfully guided his aircraft through severe turbulence, mountainous terrain and intense anti-aircraft fire to aid a reconnaissance patrol that was completely surrounded by a large hostile force. In spite of the great hazards which forced all other aircraft out of the area, Lieutenant Peterson was instrumental in saving the patrol and routing the hostile force. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Peterson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
