The Distinguish Flying Cross for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as a Helicopter Aircraft Commander with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron Three Hundred Sixty-One, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam on 30 July 1966. Serving as pilot of a UH-34D helicopter in a flight of three assigned the mission of retracting a beleaguered reconnaissance patrol in the vicinity of Hue Phu Bai, First lieutenant Parsons displayed unwavering courage and superior aeronautical skill in the performance of his duties. In the face of heavy enemy fire at close range, he successfully maneuvered his aircraft over exceedingly difficult terrain until he was able to vertically descend from 100 feet into a small clearing, which had been hacked out of the dense jungle. In spite of numerous stumps and high trees, he affected a successful landing amidst the surrounded Marines. He realized that a removal of only part of the patrol would place the remainder in serious jeopardy and courageously ordered the remaining six Marines aboard his aircraft. Realizing that its capabilities would be extended to the maximum. Demonstrating extraordinary aeronautical ability he successfully removed the Marines from danger even though his aircraft was slightly damaged by the formidable obstacles surrounding the zone. The entire precarious recovery was accomplished under heavy fire from Viet Cong units in very close proximity to the landing zone. First Lieutenant Parsons' courage, exceptional ability, and inspiring devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
