Citation:  For extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the Japanese Empire on 31 March 1945. These individuals were crew members of a B-29 aircraft which flew on three engines over an assigned primary target. Approximately one hour before reaching the enemy coast the number one engine evidenced excessive oil consumption and gave indication of possible failure. At 10,000 feet, while climbing in formation, the oil reserve became exhausted and the engine had to be feathered. The aircraft continued to climb until its flight to the assigned altitude and bombed the primary target scoring excellent results. The handicapped aircraft was over enemy territory for forty minutes and was subjected to enemy fighters and anti-aircraft fire from heavily defended areas. The determination of these men to go on to the target despite the crippled condition of The airplane thus adding to the success of the mission reflects great credit on themselves and the Army Air Forces.
