Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain John M. Nash for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Nash distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 15 March 1966 while serving as Aircraft Commander during a reconnaissance mission over hostile territory. The target was known to be heavily defended by Viet Cong forces. Captain Nash knew that, should he be forced down, the possibility of rescue was remote. Nevertheless, he unhesitatingly volunteered for this mission. During the course of his reconnaissance, he learned that another aircraft had been shot down near his location. He immediately flew to this crash site, despite the warnings of an Air Force controller, and flew over this zone, apparently intending to obtain photographs of the Viet Cong emplacements. Although the zone contained many weapons, their exact locations were unknown because they were kept underground when not firing. While attempting to take this pictures, which would save the lives of pilots on future missions, he received a direct hit and crashed. Captain Nash's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
