The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Charles C. Murphy for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Pilot over Southeast Asia on 7 November 1966. On that date, Captain Murphy was a member of a strike flight of F-105 Thunderchiefs assigned the extremely hazardous mission of destroying the heavily defended Bac Kan storage barracks and communications complex adjacent to the Bac Kan Airfield. Realizing the importance of this target, Captain Murphy fought his way through heavy ground fire, MIG threats, and numerous SA-2 missile launches to deliver his high explosive ordnance on the target, resulting in complete destruction of the target. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Murphy reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Murphy extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Pilot over North Vietnam on 16 January 1967. On that date, Captain Murphy weathered extremely heavy target defenses consisting of medium and heavy anti-aircraft artillery, SA-2 missiles, and MIG interceptors to accurately deliver his ordnance on the Ha Gia Petroleum Storage site near Hanoi. This he did with complete disregard for his own safety. The results of this attack provided vital intelligence information for friendly forces. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Murphy reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
