Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS to Captain Michael Robert Mullen, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Gunship Commander with Marine Attack Helicopter Squadron THREE HUNDRED SIXTY-NINE, in connection with operations against North Vietnamese forces in the vicinity of Hon La anchorage, Quang Binh Province, North Vietnam. On 3 October 1972, during MARHUK Operations, Captain Mullen exhibited exceptional airmanship and courage in the face of intense enemy fire while on a routine surveillance mission of a Chinese Communist merchant ship anchored off the coast of North Vietnam. Having launched as wingman in a section of two AH-1J SEA COBRA helicopters from the USS CLEVELAND (LPD-7), he flew his aircraft on numerous surveillance runs in close proximity to the freighter. His repeated maneuvers brought him extremely close to known enemy gun positions which he disregarded in his attempts to gather the most up-to-date and factual information. After orbiting the ship several times, he flew his gunship to the mainland where enemy supplies were reported to be stored. While maneuvering into extremely hazardous positions, Captain Mullen was able to obtain maximum information about the area in question. As he was flying near the beach north of Hoa La Island his aircraft fell under intense anti-aircraft weapons fire. He immediately evaded the tracer rounds and maneuvered to attack the gun emplacement. Although his aircraft was constantly bracketed by machine gun fire, he made repeated strafing and rocket runs on the position. Although his vision was constantly impaired by clouds, rain, and fog, he was able to provide maximum fire support and coverage for himself and the second aircraft. His undaunted efforts and pinpoint accuracy were instrumental in the destruction of one machine gun emplacement, and the silencing of a second gun site. Captain Mullen’s heroism, outstanding airmanship, and loyal devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
