William J. Mullen
AWARDED DFC:
1
CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: CH-37
Citation: 1.) The Republic of Vietnam. On this date he volunteered, as co-pilot, to sling load a 105mm howitzer for Vietnamese troops in Viet Cong territory. Small fire arms continuously penetrated the pick-up area, however, through his outstanding assistance, a quick hook-up was made. When the pilot was wounded by fragments from the small arms fire, Lieutenant Mullen reacted immediately and piloted the aircraft during the critical period of precision handling of the huge CH-37 from the pick-up zone to a secure area. His decisions were exact and his handling of the CH-37 under hostile small arms fire was possible only through superior ability and strong dedication. During the flight, the engineer reported hydraulic leaks, electrical wires severed, and extensive structural damage. Lieutenant Mullen's actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, and the United States Army. Authority: By direction of the President under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved 2 July 1926, and Department of the Army Message 941895, 22 October 1963.
