Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Frederick T. Morreall, Warrant Officer, WO1, 71st Aviation Company, 14th Combat Aviation Battalion, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Morreall distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 22 September 1969 while serving as an Aircraft Commander with the 71st Aviation Company. On that date, Warrant Officer Morreall was flying his helicopter in support of a friendly infantry element near Landing Zone Center. As he was making an approach to a landing zone to insert ground troops, Warrant Officer Morreall's craft came under intense enemy fire and was forced to fly to a second landing zone. While descending into the hostile area, the craft once again came under heavy enemy fire. Despite the hostile fusillade directed at his aircraft, Warrant Officer Morreall succeeded in landing the ship. While on the ground, the craft was subjected to heavy fire by assaulting enemy soldiers. Warrant Office Morreall, disregarding the danger involved, remained on the ground until all of the troops were safely out of the aircraft. As the aircraft was leaving the hostile area, it received several direct hits which caused it to go out of control. Calmly assessing the situation, Warrant Officer Morreall skillfully regained control of his helicopter and flew it to a nearby landing zone. His outstanding courage and flying ability contributed significantly to the success of the mission. Warrant Officer Morreall's personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
