Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Huey P. L. Miller for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a Pilot with Marine Light Helicopter Squadron 367, Marine Aircraft Group Sixteen, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On the night of 30 April 1970, Major Miller launched as Section Leader of a flight of two Cobra helicopters assigned the mission of supporting the emergency medical evacuation of a critically wounded Marine from a unit which was heavily engaged in combat with a hostile force in the foothills between the Que Son Mountains and Landing Zone Ross in Quang Nam Province. Arriving over the designated area, he was given a zone brief and was informed that the casualty required an immediate extraction. After flares were dropped to illuminate the area, Major Miller led his flight on repeated rocket and strafing runs against the enemy positions and then laid down a smoke screen to conceal a transport helicopter,b as it maneuvered to a landing in the zone. When the zone again came under an extremely heavy volume of hostile fire, he completely disregarded his own safety, as he boldly maneuvered his gunship and led his flight through the enemy fire on highly effective firing runs which silenced some of the hostile firing positions and suppressed the fire from others sufficiently to enable the extraction aircraft to embark the wounded Marine and safely depart for the medical facility at DaNang. On three other occasions that night, Major Miller, undaunted by the difficulty of maneuvering in the darkness over the rugged terrain and the intensity of the enemy fire directed at his Cobra, led his flight on numerous rocket and strafing runs and delivered his ordnance with such devastating effectiveness on each of the three missions that several medical evacuees were safely extracted by transport helicopters and flown to the hospital at DaNang. Major Miller's courage, superior airmanship and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger were instrumental in saving the lives of several Marines and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
