Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant Richard W. Melick for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 23 June 1969. Lieutenant Melick volunteered for a mission to aid a platoon in Company C, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry, which was heavily engaged with a company size unit of North Vietnamese soldiers in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. Realizing the disaster that would occur if the company was not linked up, he flew his light observation helicopter at treetop level to facilitate a link up. He kept all the elements informed as to enemy troop concentrations and guided them in finding the shortest and easiest routes. Due to the limited flying instruments, it is difficult to pilot a light observation helicopter at night. Lieutenant Melick disregarded the danger to himself caused by the impending darkness, as he remained in the area to help the engaged ground units. Flying without a clearance light in order to deceive the insurgents, he continued to orbit the area at treetop level to reconnoiter the terrain. He contributed immeasurably to the success of the link up and kept casualties to a minimum. Lieutenant Melick's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
