Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to CW2 Kelly C. McHugh for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer McHugh distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 16 June 1969 while serving as an Aircraft Commander with the 71st Aviation Company. On that date, Warrant Officer McHugh was flying in the lead aircraft of a light armed helicopter fire team in support of friendly ground forces operating southeast of Landing Zone Center. Despite receiving intense hostile automatic weapons fire on his first two passes over the site of the infantry unit, he continued to provide support for his comrades. On the third pass over the area, the helicopter received direct hits from anti-aircraft fire and immediately burst into flames. Reacting instantly, Warrant Officer McHugh directed his ship away from the battle zone and began a forced landing to the best available area. Despite engine failure and limited visibility due to the flames and smoke, Warrant Officer McHugh safely landed his craft. He then turned off all systems and directed the crew members to strip the ship of all operational weapons. Throughout this time, he was under enemy automatic weapons fire, but ignored the danger and painful burns suffered during the operation to encourage his men. Warrant Officer McHugh then directed the crew to a secure position and established a defensive perimeter, remaining there until a rescue ship arrived to extract them. His courageous and timely actions were directly responsible for minimizing casualties among his comrades and served as an inspiration to the entire crew. Warrant Officer McHugh's personal heroism, professional competence, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division, and the United States Army.
