Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure is awarding The Distinguished Flying Cross to William C. McDonald, Jr. for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during the period indicated. Mr. William C. McDonald, Jr., distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Chief Pilot of the China National Aviation Corporation from 14 December 1941 to 14 August 1945. During this period, Mr. McDonald's exemplary knowledge and outstanding airmanship displayed under extremely hazardous conditions, culminated in highly successful aerial support to Allied military operations in the China theater during World War II. As the Chief Pilot, Mr. McDonald and fellow crew members flew over 38,000 missions transporting 114,500 tons of vital materials and personnel to Allied Forces in China, Burma, and India. With Japanese fighter aircraft on the prowl, the 500+ mile "Hump" flights were extremely hazardous over the world's roughest terrain, in unpredictable weather conditions, and with poor navigational aids. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Mr. McDonald reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
