Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer John R. McAlpine for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 20 February 1970. Chief Warrant Officer McAlpine distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander of an AH-1G armed helicopter and leader of an aerial rocket artillery section supporting reconnaissance operations near Tiger Mountain, Republic of Vietnam on 20 February 1970. When a light observation helicopter flew low-level over suspected enemy locations, all aircraft in the area suddenly received intense automatic weapons fire. Chief Warrant Officer McAlpine immediately assaulted an enemy position and destroyed it, enabling the observation helicopter to escape the hostile fire. Despite the intense hostile fire, Chief Warrant Officer McAlpine assaulted target after target and destroyed numerous enemy positions. When he had expended most of his ordnance, he flew at low level and marked targets with his remaining rockets for tactical air strikes. His actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Chief Warrant Officer McAlpine's personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
