Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Daniel J. Matyola for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving with Marine Fighter/Attack Squadron 542, Marine Aircraft Group Thirteen, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 26 January 1967, Captain Matyola launched as Naval Flight Officer aboard the lead aircraft in a section of two F-4B Phantom aircraft on a mission in support of an operation to rescue the surviving crew member of a United States Army observation aircraft which was shot down near Chu Lai. Displaying exemplary professional ability, he skillfully navigated his flight to the target area through mountainous terrain shrouded by dense cloud and quickly established radio contact with the Tactical Air Controller (Airborne) over the downed aircraft. Requested by the Air Controller to deliver only napalm on his bombing runs due to the large fragmentation pattern of his remaining ordnance and the proximity of enemy and friendly positions, Captain Matyola rapidly computed the attack information which enabled his Pilot to accurately place his ordnance on the hostile positions. Observing the exceptional precision of the bombing runs, the Air Controller requested that the remaining ordnance be dropped. Disregarding the heavy volume of enemy ground fire which damaged his aircraft, he ably assisted in the delivery of his ordnance with unerring accuracy which effectively suppressed the enemy fire. In large measure due to his outstanding skill and determined efforts, his flight accounted for the destruction of seven enemy emplacements and contributed immeasurably to the successful evacuation of the downed crew member. Captain Matyola's courage, exceptional professionalism and unwavering devotion to duty were an inspiration to all who served with him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
