CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: -
MODEL: B-29
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Paul Malnove, Air Corps, United States Army, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 9 June 1945. Lieutenant Malnove was a combat crew member of a B-29 aircraft based in the Mariana Islands, leading a squadron in a raid on the Aichi aircraft works in Nagoya, Japan. His mission required flying 1200 miles through varying and adverse weather conditions to a formation assembly off the coast of Japan, open to fighter attacks. Making the bomb run at 18,000 feet, under aggressive enemy interceptor and anti-aircraft attack, the work of Lieutenant Malnove as Bombardier was instrumental in the excellent results obtained by his group. Despite the obstacles encountered, ninety-six percent of the target was destroyed or damaged. Without regard to personal safety, and with the ever present danger of mechanical failure or damage due to enemy action, Lieutenant Malnove, a veteran of more than twenty-two combat missions, reflected the highest credit on himself and the Army Air Forces.
