Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to William L. Madsen, Captain, Armor, United States Army, 271st Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 11 December 1969 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Madsen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as the aircraft commander on a lift helicopter near Phung Hep. While attempting the extraction of friendly troops, his aircraft came under heavy enemy fire from several locations around the pickup zone. Immediately, all aircraft communications were totally destroyed leaving him unable to talk with his crew. Disregarding the enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire, Captain Madsen remained in the landing zone until all the wounded troops were aboard. Upon their departure, he assessed the damage sustained by his aircraft and continuously monitored the helicopter for signs of critical stress limits. When the aircraft began a severe vibration, he instantly directed a landing, turning off all instruments just as the rotor blades froze in place. His decisiveness and sound judgement were instrumental in saving the aircraft and crewmembers, and the wounded soldiers from total destruction. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
