Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Gregory N. Lamb for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Lamb distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 February 1968 as Pilot of a medical evacuation helicopter on a rescue mission to Kontum City during the communist Tet offensive. He received an urgent request to evacuate severely wounded soldiers from a military compound under heavy siege. The enemy surrounded the compound and was placing intense automatic weapons fire on the helicopter landing pad. Realizing the urgency of the mission, Captain Lamb, disregarding his personal safety, decided to evacuate the wounded. Despite the intense hostile fire, he skillfully maneuvered his ship into the landing area and within minutes had a load of patients enroute to the hospital. Returning to the embattled area a second and third time, he evacuated two more loads under a continuing hostile fusillade. His fearless actions were responsible for saving several lives at great risk to his own. Captain Lamb's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
