The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Oak Leaf Cluster) to Warrant Officer Arthur R. Jacobs for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Jacobs distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 16 July 1968 while serving as an Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter during a combat mission near Camp Evans, Republic of Vietnam. When a OH-6A helicopter was downed in enemy-controlled terrain, Warrant Officer Jacobs immediately volunteered to extract the crew members. With complete disregard for his own safety, Warrant Officer Jacobs attempted to hover over the crash site, but was forced on the first three attempts to leave due to the intense hostile ground fire. On the fourth attempt, Warrant Officer Jacobs despite the enemy fire, remained in the area and safely evacuated the downed crew members. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
