Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer John C. Horvath for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 31 October 1969. Chief Warrant Officer Horvath distinguished himself while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1H helicopter during the rescue of a downed helicopter crew about 25 miles south of Hue, Republic of Vietnam. Chief Warrant Officer Horvath skillfully maneuvered his Aircraft Commander into the contested landing zone. The landing zone was extremely hazardous, consisting of tree stumps and tall dead trees with enemy fire coming from only 50 meters away. He hovered his helicopter with its forward section over the edge of a 30 foot cliff in extremely turbulent winds until all wounded crew members were safely loaded. He then executed a perfect take-off, as the flames and heat from the downed aircraft began to intensify. His courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the lives of the wounded crew members. Chief Warrant Officer Horvath's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
