Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant John A. Hopkins for distinguishing himself by heroic achievement, while participating in aerial flight in the Republic of Vietnam from 14 November-15 November 1965, while assigned to Company A, 229th Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). On 14 November 1965, First Lieutenant Hopkins flew in a flight of four helicopters to Landing Zone X-ray. He flew essential reinforcements into the heavily engaged battlefield. The intensity of the enemy fire on the landing zone had already caused two helicopters to go down in the battle area and one Air Force fighter-bomber to crash and explode. On 15 November 1965, First Lieutenant Hopkins was Aircraft Commander on a night resupply mission. The 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, had been heavily engaged with the enemy and their ammunition supply was almost depleted. The visibility was poor with overcast conditions and horizon due to the absolute darkness in the battle area. First Lieutenant Hopkins, realizing the seriousness of the situation, immediately volunteered for the hazardous night mission even though he recently completed a 10 hour combat mission. First Lieutenant Hopkins proceeded to the landing zone undaunted by the heavy enemy fire and marginal flying conditions. Displaying outstanding flying skills he maneuvered the helicopter over tall trees, through the smoke, to the touchdown spot guided only by a pathfinder's flashlight, and landed at Landing Zone X-ray under enemy fire. With courage in the face of enemy fire, he remained on the ground for several minutes to permit the unloading of supplies and evacuation of wounded Soldiers. First Lieutenant Hopkins again displayed outstanding flying skills as he expertly executed an instrument take off over the trees, through heavy smoke and enemy fire. First Lieutenant Hopkins' actions have shown personal heroism and gallantry, professional competence, and a totally unselfish concern for the safety of others, which are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United states Army.
