3.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Marvin K. Hollenbeck for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a plane in Marine Fighter Squadron Three Hundred Eleven during operations against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 14 February 1953. Leading a flight of jet fighter-bombers on a close air support mission against concealed hostile mortar and bunker positions, which were inflicting severe damage on advancing friendly ground troops, Major Hollenbeck instructed his flight to orbit out of range of the enemy anti-aircraft fire while he skillfully maneuvered his aircraft through the precipitous terrain and intense hostile fire to locate the target successfully. Exercising extreme caution to avoid endangering friendly troops in proximity to the well-concealed enemy, he initiated a daring low-altitude assault and, in the face of increasingly accurate hostile fire, scored direct hits on the enemy bunkers. With the objective clearly marked for the rest of his flight, he courageously remained at minimum altitude to direct the group in pressing home devastating bombing runs which completely destroyed the target. By his exemplary leadership, exceptional skill and unswerving devotion to duty, Major Hollenbeck was largely responsible for the success of a mission that inflicted numerous casualties upon the enemy and substantially reduced hostile pressure on advancing friendly troops, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
