Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Robert L. Harrison for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight while serving as a pilot with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 263, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. During Operation Beaver Cage on 10 May 1967, First Lieutenant Harrison was Wingman in the second section of a flight of eight UH-34D helicopters launched on a Sparrowhawk insertion mission in support of Company B, First Battalion, Third Marines. When the first landing zone came under heavy enemy mortar fire, First Lieutenant Harrison unhesitatingly commenced an approach into an alternate landing zone. Throughout the approach into the hazardous area, he encountered intense enemy automatic weapons fire which damaged his aircraft. Demonstrating resolute determination the face of enemy fire, he continued his approach, landed in the hostile zone and delivered the reinforcements to the beleaguered company. Observing that his section leader's aircraft had been severely damaged by intense ground fire which forced the pilot to crash land in a nearby area, First Lieutenant Harrison, displaying calm courage and steadfast determination, elected to remain in the fire swept landing zone in order to provide assistance to the crew of the damaged helicopter. Subsequently, the increasing heavy volume of enemy fire wounded his copilot and crew chief and forces him to depart the area. Displaying exceptional aeronautical ability, he maneuvered his severely damaged helicopter out of the area and delivered his wounded to the USS SANCTUARY. First Lieutenant Harrison's courage, superior airmanship and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
