Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lester M. Fullen, First Lieutenant, Armor, United States Army, Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Fullen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 25 September 1967, while serving as an aircraft commander of an armed helicopter team during a combat support mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When a section of the main rotor partially separated and a four foot section flew from the aircraft in flight, Lieutenant Fullen was able to land his helicopter in a small clearing on the slope of a large mountain. Due to Lieutenant Fullen’s flying ability and sound judgment, he was able to land his aircraft with no further damage and saved the lives of the crew. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Fullen, First Lieutenant, Armor, United States Army, Troop A, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Fullen distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 23 October 1967, while serving as a team leader of an armed helicopter team during a rescue mission near Bong Son, Republic of Vietnam. When a helicopter was forced down, Lieutenant Fullen landed his aircraft to extract the wounded crewmembers. He departed the dangerous landing zone only after the injured crewmembers were safely aboard. After rushing the injured men to a medical aid station, Lieutenant Fullen returned to the crash site and provided covering fire for the extraction of the disabled helicopter. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
