CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Korea

Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (First Oak Leaf Cluster) to Captain Ralph L. Geeslin who distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in a night intruder mission over North Korea on 23 March 1951. As navigator-bombardier of a B-26 attack bomber, Captain Geeslin displayed outstanding airmanship and aggressiveness by directing his pilot through sub-marginal weather to his briefed area just south of the Manchurian border. While preforming armed reconnaissance along the highway and railroad between Sinanju and Sinaiju, Korea, Captain Geeslin sighted a large convoy of vehicles. He directed a low-level bomb run on this convoy resulting in the destruction of six vehicles and damage to several others. Captain Geeslin sighted a train consisting of fifteen box cars and a locomotive. He dropped his first bombs in order to stop the train, making it possible to drop his remaining bombs more effectively. After expending all his bombs, Captain Geeslin directed his pilot on several low-level strafing passes on the train. As a result of these bombing and strafing attacks, four (4) box cars were destroyed and the locomotive and remainder of the cars were severely damaged. These attacks were carried out despite the submarginal weather conditions and intense antiaircraft fire. Through his outstanding ability, courage, and devotion to duty, Captain Geeslin has brought great credit upon himself, his organization and the United States air Force.
