CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: -
MODEL: O-1
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Bobby J. Gee for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Gee distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 26 August 1966 while serving as Pilot of an O-1 observation airplane calling for and adjusting Naval gun fire in support of ground forces on Phi Quoc Island. Captain Gee began his observation when the ground unit made sudden contact with a Viet Cong force and was pinned down by the intense fire. Because of low clouds and heavy foliage and the proximity of the hostile and friendly troops, he had to fly dangerously low to get good observation. He disregarded the intense fire aimed at him and brought the Naval gun fire right into the hostile positions only a few meters from the friendly troops. The Viet Cong broke contact and the ground advance continued. Shortly thereafter, the friendly force was again pinned down by hostile fire. Due to approaching darkness, Captain Gee was forced to make repeated passes to distinguish hostile from friendly positions, now only 15 meters apart. Again his adjustments were so accurate that the earth was scorched only a few meters in front of the friendly force. Again instrumental in breaking the insurgent's offensive, he then directed the medical evacuation. Captain Gee's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
