CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Korea
MODEL: B-26
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Harold J. DeKoyer for distinguishing himself in aerial flight on the night of 4 March 1952 as navigator of a B-26 attack bomber against an enemy of the United Nations. Lieutenant DeKoyer and his crew were proceeding to their pre-briefed target area when their aircraft was diverted by a ground controller to the area near Kangye, North Korea, where three live locomotives had been sighted. Lieutenant DeKoyer immediately plotted a new course and expertly directed his aircraft to the vicinity, where he found three locomotives on a siding. From his position in the nose, Lieutenant DeKoyer skillfully aided his pilot during the bombing and strafing passes by pointing out terrain obstructions and guiding him on to the target. Eleven daring passes were made, during which, two of the locomotives were destroyed and several small fires started. Lieutenant DeKoyer’s outstanding navigational ability and expert crew coordination reflect great credit upon himself, his organization, and the United States Air Force.
