CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: Vietnam
MODEL: CH-47C
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Robert F. Curtis for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in Laos. Chief Warrant Officer Curtis distinguished himself on 4 March 1971 while serving as Aircraft Commander of a CH-47 cargo helicopter during the attempted insertion of an artillery piece into an Army of the Republic of Vietnam firebase in Laos. Although good weather allowed Chief Warrant Officer Curtis to fly high over sources of enemy fire, his aircraft was hit by the intense hostile anti-aircraft fire, as he piloted his aircraft down toward the firebase. Chief Warrant Officer Curtis was hit by flying Plexiglas fragments from the shattered windshield and the aircraft began to lose power. He decided to jettison the load and attempt an emergency landing at another nearby firebase. Despite his wounds and the severe damage to the aircraft, Chief Warrant Officer Curtis was able to land the aircraft safely. His efforts were instrumental in insuring the safety of the aircraft and its crew. Chief Warrant Officer Curtis' outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
