Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer Richard R. Crow, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 26 January 1970 in Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Warrant Officer Crow was serving as Aircraft Commander of his vulture helicopter on a night search and destroy mission in assistance to a reconnaissance ground team in heavy contact near Phouc Ving. Upon arrival over the contact area, his aircraft was subjected to intense rocket-propelled grenade fire. Disregarding his personal safety, Warrant Officer Crow remained over the contact area to ensure that the friendly unit was not overrun by the attacking insurgents. When the friendly ground element was forced to withdraw, Warrant Officer Crow remained exposed to the hostile fire to allow his door gunners and himself an advantageous position from which to place effective covering fire upon the insurgents. Continuing to risk his life, he directed a rescue helicopter into position by using illumination, even though it meant exposing his aircraft to more enemy ground fusillade. His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the successful rescue of the beleaguered ground patrol. Warrant Officer Crow’s actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
