CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT: -
MODEL: C-130E
Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Hugh L. Cox III for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a C-130E Aircraft Commander, Seventh Airborne Command and Control Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on 4 May 1971. During the latter part of this mission, an emergency engine shutdown was made which required staying airborne with three engines in operation while over hostile territory. With tactical air operations in progress and no replacement aircraft available, it became mandatory for his aircraft to remain on station. Major Cox quickly implemented driftdown procedures, determined optimum aircraft altitude, assessed the adverse conditions of high terrain, thunderstorm activity, and heavy icing and skillfully directed the course of his aircraft at reduced altitudes to avoid active hostile anti-aircraft gun positions. Disregarding his own personal safety, Major Cox maintained the vital communications link for an air operation of utmost importance. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Cox reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
