The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Edward I. Carroll for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Carroll distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 26 February 1969 while serving as a Pilot with Company A, 9th Aviation Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, on a medical evacuation mission east of Cai Be. Upon learning that a friendly ground element had sustained several casualties who needed immediate evacuation, Lieutenant Carroll flew to their location and attempted to land in an extremely small landing zone amidst intense enemy fire. When the craft sustained a direct hit which destroyed the anti-torque control, causing it to spin wildly, he skillfully gained control of the craft and landed it safely away from the position of the ground forces. First Lieutenant Carroll's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
2.)
The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Edward I. Carroll for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action, above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Carroll distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 6 June 1969 while serving as an Aviation Section Commander with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Brigade, on a medical evacuation mission north of Ben Tre. When a request for immediate medical evacuation of a Kit Carson scout was received, Captain Carroll, after surveying the situation, directed the Ground Commander to the nearest landing zone. Making a nearly vertical landing through a double canopy of coconut trees, Captain Carroll displayed great competence and composure under pressure. Although sniped at repeatedly, Captain Carroll successfully completed the medical evacuation. Captain Carroll's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
