Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant John C. Carmichael for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot of an F-86 type aircraft, 18th Fighter Bomber Wing, Fifth Air Force, on 15 June 1953. Flying as element leader in a flight of four (4) F-86 type aircraft, Lieutenant Carmichael displayed outstanding airmanship and bombing skill while supporting United Nations frontline positions in the Door Knob area of the Pukhan River, Korea. A large enemy breakthrough in this sector necessitated maximum effort air strikes to avert disaster to the frontline troops. Despite intense small arms fire, Lieutenant Carmichael made two (2) devastating strafing passes in addition to his accurately placed bombs, resulting in one (1) huge secondary explosion of stored enemy munitions, approximately fifty (50) yards of enemy trench line were destroyed and an undetermined number of enemy troops were killed or wounded. As a result of this highly successful mission, vital enemy gun positions and troop concentrations were destroyed or damaged, seriously hampering the enemy’s potential in that sector. Throughout his entire combat tour, Lieutenant Carmichael has displayed outstanding airmanship, leadership and devotion to duty, bringing great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force
