Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Kenneth R. Carlton, Captain, Infantry, United States Army, 191st Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 19 December 1969 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Carlton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as aircraft commander of a command and control helicopter when an allied ground force discovered an enemy platoon northwest of Vinh Long. Captain Carlton immediately radioed for gunship support and then descended through intense enemy fire to engage the enemy. When gunships arrived on the scene, he directed their fire on the hostile positions, adjusting rocket fire which routed the enemy force. By his exceptional flying abilities and unwavering courage under fire, he was instrumental to the success of the mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
