Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHING FLYING CROSS to Michael A. Cappiello, Aviation Radioman Third Class, United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Nansei Shoto and Kyushu Islands from 18 March to 5 May 1945. As gunner and radioman of a carrier-based aircraft, Petty Officer Cappiello participated in twenty strikes against enemy shipping, airfields and installations, inflicting extensive damage. His skill, courage, and inspiring devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
