The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant David William Cable, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a pilot of a jet aircraft while attached to Attack Squadron THIRTY-FIVE, embarked in USS ENTERPRISE (CVA(N)65). On the night of 5 April 1967, Lieutenant Cable piloted an A-6A on a daring and highly successful night strike against an important thermal power plant deep in North Vietnam. Displaying great skill and courage, he flew at extremely low altitudes through the heavy enemy defenses to the target. Amidst intense anti-aircraft gunfire and a barrage of surface-to-air missiles, he successfully placed his bombs on the assigned target. Lieutenant Cable’s courage, skill, and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
