Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant James F. Byrne for extraordinary heroism in combat evidencing voluntary action above and beyond that normally expected. Each, as a crew member of a bombardment type aircraft, participated in fifteen (15) strike sorties against the enemy, displaying high professional skill, courage, and devotion to duty which reflected great credit upon himself and the Army Air Forces.
