CONFLICT/SPACE FLIGHT/EVENT:  Vietnam
MODEL:  AH-1G

Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Christopher M. Burnette, First Lieutenant, Armor, Troop C, 2nd Squadron (Airmobile), 17th Cavalry, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 24 October 1969. Lieutenant Burnette distinguished himself while serving as pilot of an AH-1G gunship on a reconnaissance mission northwest of the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. The lead light observation helicopter began receiving intense anti-aircraft fire. As it maneuvered clear of the enemy positions, the lead gunship started to engage the position. It was immediately evident that the attacking ship was too close to the target when it rolled in. As it began to break after firing its rockets, Lieutenant Burnette immediately engaged the insurgents. Had he waited momentarily, the lead gunship would have received direct hits because of its close proximity to the target and the broadside silhouette which it offered on the break. Once again, Lieutenant Burnette carried his attack nearly to the ground to further cover the vulnerable lead ship. His outstanding flying ability and quick realization of the impending danger resulted in the escape of the lead gunship. Lieutenant Burnette’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
