Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS to MAJOR ERIC F. BUER UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for heroism while participating in aerial flight as Flight Lead of an AH-lW Cobra attached to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269, 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, I Marine Expeditionary Force in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 30 March 2003. In the vicinity of An Nasiriyah, Iraq, Major Buer' s courage under fire, calm leadership, and sound judgment were paramount during engagements of both Fedayeen Saddam forces and elements of the Iraqi 11th Infantry Di vision. Flying through defense artillery fire, Major Buer expertly led his flight and directed four flights of AV-8Bs and A-l0s in support of ground forces in close contact with fortified Iraqi positions. Although his flight sustained multiple hits from Iraqi anti-aircraft gunners, he continued to deliver a devastating mix of precision-guided munitions, unguided rockets, and cannon fire in support of Task Force TARAWA, while simultaneously guiding fixed wing attacks in support of Marines fighting street-to-street. During these engagements his flight destroyed the Ba'ath Party meetinghouse, the Saddam Fedayeen Headquarters, and multiple mortar and sniper positions. Adjusting for close urban conditions and the proximity of friendly and enemy units, Major Buer consistently delivered ordnance within 300 meters of friendly forces. These "danger close” missions, which exposed his flight to Iraqi gunners, were essential to saving Marines on the ground. By his airmanship, inspiring courage, and loyal devotion to duty in the face of hazardous flying conditions, Major Buer reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
