Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class Walter J. Bryant for heroism and for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an Aircrewman in a Patrol Plane in Patrol Bombing Squadron One Hundred Seventeen, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Pacific War Area on February 20, 1945. Participating in a long range search and reconnaissance mission along the coast of Indo-China, BRYANT rendered invaluable assistance to his Pilot in conducting attacks which resulted in the destruction of two airborne enemy planes and the damage of another. His devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services.
