Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Charles W. Bruton, Captain, Armor, United States Army, 220th Aviation Company (Surv) (O-1), Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 3 July 1968 to 7 July 1968 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Captain Bruton distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions in support of Operation Thor, a counter-battery maneuver against enemy emplacements in North Vietnam. Flying a light, reconnaissance aircraft through extremely intensive hostile fires, he directed airstrikes and artillery missions against lucrative targets north of the Demilitarized Zone with outstanding results. His professional competence in target acquisition and engagement resulted in the destruction of many threatening weapons emplacements, an impressive amount of enemy supplies, and a large number of enemy personnel. In the face of great personal danger Captain Bruton performed a feat far beyond the capability of his modest aircraft without injury to himself or his observer. His superb airmanship stands as a sterling example to all who became involved in tactical fighting. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
