Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Larry D. Brown, First Lieutenant, Air Defense Artillery, 162nd Aviation Company (Assault Helicopter) United States Army, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 21 March 1971 for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. First Lieutenant Brown distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as pilot of armed helicopters on a combat assault mission in the U Minh Forest, twenty miles north of Ca Mau. A heavy firestorm of gunships was scrambled to provide cover for troop insertions into the vicinity surrounding two Allied gunships that had been downed by enemy fire earlier in the day. While in the flight these men placed effective cover fire on the countless enemy positions. Through their valiant efforts the Allied security force was strategically placed to secure the downed aircraft. Through their outstanding courage and ability as aviators, the mission was successfully completed. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United states Army.
