Citation: 1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major George R. Brooking for heroism and extraordinary achievement against the enemy on 12 October 1944. While leading a flight on an armed reconnaissance mission in the Aachen-Cologne area of Germany, he encountered a formation of forty (40) ME-109’s and, even though vastly outnumbered, immediately and aggressively initiated an attack. Quickly selecting an opponent, he set out after him, skillfully outmaneuvering the German in every endeavor. Major Brooking’s daring and accurate gunnery poured into the 109 and destroyed it. His cool judgment, splendid courage and outstanding pilot technique are a credit to himself and the Army Air Forces.
