The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant James A. Yule for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller near Duc Co, Republic of Vietnam, on 21 May 1970. On that date, Lieutenant Yule flew in support of ground troops and a helicopter reconnaissance patrol. Simultaneously, both the ground unit and helicopters came under intense fire from a hostile base area. Lieutenant Yule directed tactical airstrikes in the face of the heavy ground fire, making multiple accurate passes to mark target positions and insure their destruction. As a result of this timely and accurate air support, the opposing forces sustained extensive damage. The professional competence, aerial skill and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Yule reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Yule for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 26 December 1970. On that date, Lieutenant Yule flew in support of a beleaguered six man patrol under heavy fire. Ignoring heavy anti-aircraft fire, he directed air strikes which effectively suppressed the hostile activity and allowed the team to be extracted by helicopter. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Yule reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
