Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Dana M. Young, Warrant Officer, W1, United States Army, 240th Aslt Hel Co, Republic of Vietnam, for action dated 4 October 1968, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Young distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as an aircraft commander supporting the 9th Infantry Division. On a five ship insertion, his flight started receiving heavy automatic weapons fire. Although his aircraft took many hits, he led the flight through evasive maneuvers and out of range of the enemy fire. One aircraft was hit in the transmission and went down. Without hesitation, he broke out of formation and landed his own damaged ship in a hostile area to rescue the downed crew. Again taking fire, he loaded the wounded on board and proceeded to the nearest medical facility. Chief Warrant Officer Young’s courage, fearlessness and sound judgment contributed to the success of the mission and the saving of lives. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
