Citation:  1.) The President of the United States takes great pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Johnie J. Wright, Jr., for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Wright distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 17 February 1967 while serving as Pilot of a reconnaissance aircraft over enemy territory. In preparation for a major thrust at insurgent supply lines, Major Wright volunteered to fly a very hazardous night reconnaissance mission. As his small plane was buffeted by the strong winds, he flew lower and lower, following Viet Cong supply routes and discovering well-hidden depots. Exposing himself to extreme danger, Major Wright gathered a great deal of very valuable information, enabling allied forces to strike effectively at Viet Cong forces in the area. Major Wright's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
